I can't say that I agree with you. Obviously they grew leery of his presence once already. So much so they offered him a non-compensating position plus asked him to sign an NDA. You don't typically do all that if the person staring you down isn't a threat.

As the old phrase goes, "Keep your friends close and your enemies closer."
