Years ago and maybe even know, there was a tag on each mattress, that said: it is against the law blah blah to remove this tag.

Laws are broken all the time, especially, if they are not enforced.

If you ever read the whole tag, you'd notice that it was illegal for anyone except the end consumer to remove the tags. If you bought the mattress to put in your house, you could rip the tag off. It was a law enacted to protect consumers.

The mattress tag thing is kind of a myth. But I'm with you on the short rules.
