I strongly suggest looking at patent 5440749 in pair and reviewing all the past rejections and responses, going all the way back to the first rejection in Dec 1991. Much is explained in those 3 or 4 rejections/responses with respect to 584, 336 and 148 patents. Moore was explaining this stuff back then as well. Defintely worth the time, if you have it IMHO.
