Dr. Kyle D. Chen is an associate in the Cooley Litigation department and is a member of the Intellectual Property practice group. He joined the Firm in 2009 and is resident in the Palo Alto office.
Dr. Chen represents clients in intellectual property litigation matters. He has broad educational and professional experience in electrical, mechanical and industrial engineering arts. This experience covers fields such as semiconductor fabrication, computer science, manufacturing systems, electro-mechanical integration, and operations management.
Dr. Chen has participated in International Trade Commission (ITC) investigations, including one involving two of the world's largest semiconductor manufacturers. The resulting settlement amount in favor of the client was one of the highest in recent ITC history. In addition, Dr. Chen has assisted in a ground-breaking patent litigation brought in Singapore involving Universal Serial Bus (USB) portable flash memories. He has also assisted in the prosecution of various patent applications before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

Dr. Chen earned his J.D. from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law, where he was an Articles Editor for Hastings, International and Comparative Law Review. Prior to attending law school, Dr. Chen received a Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering & Engineering Management from Stanford University, with his thesis focusing on semiconductor manufacturing. He received an M.S. in Computer Science and another M.S. in Engineering-Economic Systems from Stanford University. He also received an M.S. in Manufacturing Systems Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin. In addition, Dr. Chen received his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from National Taiwan University.
Dr. Chen is a member of the California State Bar. He is admitted to the U.S. District Court for the Northern, Central and Southern Districts of California, the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. In addition, Dr. Chen is a member of the American Bar Association and American Mensa.
Dr. Chen also speaks Mandarin Chinese.
