Well I can think of at least one more: he could pass it on. A new judge will have to make the ruling and take the heat.

Think about it. How do court procedings continue if a judge suddenly is not available for medical or other reasons. Who picks up the ball? Ron, do you have a comment on how that works?

Does a judge have a back up like in the theater where their is an understudy? This is all high theater is it not? LOL

Really is the whole trial delayed because of the need for a new judge and that judge havinng to get up to speed and become familiar with the case?
