FWIW

5,440,749 (assigned to Nanotronics Corporation) which is referenced in the 6,598,148 (issue date July 22, 2003 and assigned to Patriot) was filed August 3, 1989 and issued August 8, 1995. (6 years of examination!)

If not mistaken at the time it was a choice of 20 years from filing (giving more reach back perhaps?) or 17 years from issue date.

Thus '749 would have expired in either 2009 or 2012 meanwhile '148 would seem to still have a long time to go (2023) if there is anything of value still within.
