I can think of several other words for that sentence, but "intelligent" isn't one of them. "Intelligent" would have meant they (or their predecessors) would not have allowed the company to be held to ransom by Swartz and Leckrone.

Some may lean more towards "predatory", "immoral", "insensitive", "arrogant", "self-interested" ..... Others may have other ideas.
