I agree the lawyers should know. Hopefully Judge Grewal made a strong indication as to how he will rule so the parties can prepare with confidence. I know Judge Grewal ruled from the bench for the second Markman, which I would bet he doesn't quite often do, providing guidance for the competing sides. Most Judges have had experience in the courtroom and hopefully Judge Grewal understands how a late MSJ ruling would waste everyone's time, including the courts time. Obviously, there are alternate views.
