My understanding is that the $8B constitutes the portion of revenues generated over the time frame involved (2006-2011 I believe) from just those specific products enumerated in the court case.
To be more clear, HTC earned well in excess of $14B in revenue in just the 2 years 2009 & 2010, so the $8B in question for the period in question was clearly for just a small portion of their product offering and for particular time involved, though it's stated as an award for the lifetime of the patent. That last part is a bit misleading, IMO, when you're talking about cellphones. For example, some phones that HTC sold in 2008 are no longer being made, so while they are covered through the life of the patent for those phones, they're no longer generating revenue from them.
