What you describe is the founder/inventor, entrepeneur and then small business owner, but not the CEO.
In my 25 years experience I've rarely met people you describe, simply because the way you have to get to the top mostly prevents "heroes" coming up - those who reach the top often are those who where the most reckless, egocentric ones.
And I said it many times in the last years: for me Cliff is still a CFO and not a CEO - the "interim" thing has always been a workaround because the BoD anticipated the coming difficulties.
What I also said many times before: even if PTSC would have had a leader after 2007 I'm afraid the situation would not be that much different.
By the way on contrary to 2004: This was the time where a strong leader could have made a huge difference but this is useless theory.
