Google going to court in a patent battle

Google is smart and places a bet on both sides of this case.

Jury selection is due to start today at a federal court in Delaware in a trial over claims by INTELLECTUAL VENTURES that GOOGLE (GOOG) unit Motorola Mobility violated the privately held patent company's smartphone IP, including with Google Play.
The trial will take place as Congress debates whether to limit software patents and make it easier to battle lawsuits.
A win for Google could be used to show that the government issues too many problematic patents.
Interestingly, the search giant participated in IV's first patent investment fund.
