If they had divulged the Apple deal when it happened then anyone with an 8-digit calculator (yes, I'm that old) would have figured out how little the Apple MMP license fee was. By hiding behind the veil of secrecy the BoD bought some time to extract more money from PTSC and then litigate against TPL before settling on terms worse than we had before and with even greater secrecy.
