After Friday`s Bell Market Commentary

On Friday, U.S. crude for March delivery climbed $1.50 to settle at $67.76 a barrel. The U.S. economy slowed to a growth rate of 1.1% annually during the 4th quarter beset by higher energy costs and less consumer spending. The Commerce Department reported that new home sales in 2005 climbed 6.6% to a new high of 1.28 million units, the fifth straight year of record sales. For the month of December, sales of new single family homes surprised analysts by going up 2.9%. Strong corporate earnings lifted the markets to close higher. The Dow Jones industrial average was up 97.74 points, or 0.90 percent, to end at 10,907.21. The Nasdaq Composite Index was up 21.23 points, or 0.93 percent, at 2,304.23. The Standard & Poor`s 500 Index was up 9.89 points, or 0.78 percent, at 1,283.72. The Russell 2000 gained 4 points to 732.
