Abstract:

Initially designed for the Sony Playstation 3, the Cell Processor (a joint development of IBM, Sony and Toshiba) is a powerful general-purpose multiprocessor, now intended for a variety of compute-intensive stream processing applications. It could be used for some types of filtering and monitoring applications outside of its original design targets. The architecture might be modified for packet processing in the future. In this talk, I give a brief overview of the processor and its architecture. I will also summarize our experiences in programming this processor using the available programming tools.
