as the shm is on a Friday all bets are off. If you are staying down in San Diego (what hotel are you at?) and you want to be up at the resort two hours before the meeting suggest that you start by 7am. Easily could be

an hour plus commute at that time of day going north. On the return on a Friday traffic backs up both ways (north and south) and rush hour on that day usually begins around 2pm.

Suggest you relax and enjoy the beautiful San Diego scenery. If you hate traffic you might want to take Pacific Coast Highway (101) which runs parallel to 5 but runs along the Ocean and through a number of quaint beach towns. Although there are stoplights and signs along this route it is more relaxing then putting up with the congestion on 5. If you do take 5 when you come up to the split by I805 and 5 which is undergoing construction and when finished will have 24 lanes of traffic!
