The battle to drill has been going on for much more than 10 years. Had there been an effort to allow that process to begin 15-20 years ago, as was promoted by some, we wouldn't be waiting right now, and in reality, it may have impacted not only our available energy sources, but also our need and/or desires to intervene in the Middle East!
In these ways, those who oppose developing domestic resources in the name of environmentalism, probably do much more harm than good. IMO, the efforts of most "enviromentalists" in the US and the Western world in general would be best served and would be more "enlightened" if they were to concentrate on better ways for all energy sources to be tapped rather than expending such efforts simply prohibiting their tapping.
