You say:
"What's the matter with competition? Except that the insurers say they can't compete with the government."
I say:
That's a legit statement, but where is the competition in a single payer system?
We need to fix what we have by limiting lawsuits and the huge awards. This will allow doctors to treat patients properly and cost effectively, as opposed to over-treat patients so that cover their butts.
We also have to make sure insurance companies cannot deny coverage to anyone.
We need to make sure you can take your insurance with you when you quit a job or move to another job (in state or out of state).
We need to train more Dr's. and RN's to take care of those millions who will enter the system. Many healthcare situations do not require a Dr. A RN can do it and the cost would be less.
We need to allow a person to see any Dr. they want, not only those on some list.
There are plenty more things that need to be fixed, but that can legislated.
As far as who pays for all this, well maybe it's a % of your income, or maybe the gov't kicks in some portion along with the insured. Maybe a flat insurance tax. I'm sure an equitable way to pay can be found other than the gov't paying for everyone.
