A crisis at South Africa’s predominant electricity supplier, Eskom Holdings SOC Ltd., threatens the nation’s economy.

The state-owned utility can’t cover its costs and make the huge interest payments on its mountain of debt. Its poorly maintained power plants are struggling to meet demand, and it has gone through 10 chief executive officers in a decade.

Goldman Sachs Group Inc. describes Eskom as the biggest risk to the country’s economy.

The assets sales will help ERG pay off some of its debt, the sources said. VTB agreed last year to extend the terms covering $3 billion of ERG’s debt to 2022. As of July 2016, ERG owed $5.8 billion to its main creditors, VTB (VTBR.MM) and Sberbank (SBER.MM).

“The company needs to raise cash and is looking to spin off some of its assets, most likely the ferrochrome and power ones, and list them,” another banking source said.

The sources said VTB Capital(Russian investment bank) and Rothschild (ROTH.PA) were working on the plan.

ERG was not immediately available to comment.

Ankara’s procurement of the S-400 air defence missiles from Russia has strained its ties with Washington, which maintains the systems are not compatible with NATO equipment and may compromise its F-35 fighter jets.

Washington has removed Turkey from the F-35 fighter jet programme over the purchase and warned of possible U.S. sanctions to follow
