The analogy to IT purchases, or just that basic info, is helpful but not quite appropriate. A company like Intel, if it is evaluating the POET/PET technology, simply needs to determine that the technology is viable and that the roadmap offers cost-effective performance improvements over the alternative silicon process.

That decision could be made relatively quickly after they verify that they can produce the chips using standard fabs. The latest news is great if PET is actually being made (or going to be made) in a potential buyer's fab. That means that they believe that PET is potentially viable and worth taking a serious look at.

If POET's PET technology gets licensed after this process, it would be some time before we see PET chips in the marketplace. The manufacturer would have to gear up a fab, design chips (not a quick task), make sample chips, send them out, and THEN the 6-8 month IT purchasing decision lag would kick in. 2-3 years from now would be an incredibly quick timeline for all of this to happen. Licensing revenue would be some time from now. However, if that process started, the shareprice for POET would jump incredibly in anticipation of that revenue so we would be quite happy.

Even at comparable performance to current silicon chips, PET would have a dominant position in the marketplace with much lower power consumption. Tablets (ipads), smartphones, laptops are all about reducing power consumption. Reduce the power needs means smaller batteries and thus less cost for the overall product.
