Banks/Brokerages have been using their own client's stop orders to figure out how to trade against them. They will also buy shares just before you buy them, and flip it over to you at an incremental increase in cost.. I forget the book that just got published with all of this, but essentially it comes down to network latency and their knowledge of your portfolio using their systems.
