2 prototypes are:

1. Ring oscillator - basically is used to "show" maximum capable speed and power consumption at those speeds. This is a very common IC prototype.

2. Vertical cavity laser - basically uses quantum wells to emit light. Poets vertical cavity laser is different then most as it has the capabilities to emit light horizontally as well as vertical using DBR mirrors. I am assuming this will be made in a monolithic chip as apposed to a attachment.

I feel the second one is going to be the "grand prize" so to speak.
