The technology already exists for aircraft to communicate with each other so as to avoid collisions. It is known as TCAS. (Traffic Collision Avoidance System). The technology monitors proximate traffic using a transponder and when certain closing parameters are met, the pilots are instructed how to avoid a collision. However, manual intervention is still required................................................................................................. No kidding.. About 20 years ago I was flying my old Cessna and was on final approach to landing and from no where a Piper 140 on base leg was coming right at my left ear.. I dived so no problem.. This was uncontrolled airspce.. I talked to the piper pilot after and he was looking off to the left at the runway and not to the right.. It was during a squall so the visiblitly was not great.. I rather doubt that TCAS would have been fast enough this time.. Best to keep your eyes open .
