This "toy" is based on near infrared spectroscopy, and in fact it also can be perfectly used for minerals!
But clearly - it is not a toy. This kind of technology is at the moment only available in analytical labs and - really very expensive. But we are on a change of paradigms again! It soon is in the hands of everyone on the street!
Near infrared, this is a good part of the capabilities of POET. Imagine, all would be on one chip: light source (LASER), detector, the data generation, manipulation and sending via WIFI/ RF to the cloud servers for final data treatment (as at the moment the database would not fit on this device)!
And - to let my thoughts fly a little further: Imagine if you are shrinking all this on a nm-scale, you could even do NIR-imaging: A photo which is telling you not (only) the colors, but could tell you the material, the chemistry of each pixel of your image! This my friends, would be real science fiction, fare better than any tri-corder of star trek!
Yes, we ain't seen nothing yet!!!
