Message: The growth of electricity demand to power global IT - one of POET's solutions

A very interesting observation is that a more efficient use of energy will not lead to less energy consumption. The contrary is true: overall consumption will rise. The reason is that a higher energy efficiency makes applications possible that were unaffordable before. Think of how much LED lighting is applied today because LED lighting is so much cheaper than using incandescent lamps!

This effect is known as the rebound effect or as the Jevons Paradox. The Breakthrough Institute has a short article about it, The New Yorker has a long one, Mark Halper explains the myth of LED energy savings (without explicitly mentioning Jevons Paradox), and of course there's a Wikipedia article.

Applied to the POET technology, the energy consumption of the individual gadget will drop (like LED versus incandescent lamps), but just because of that, new ideas for new applications will emerge, more gadgets than ever before will be built and sold. As a POET shareholder I might say this would not be that bad at all.
