Yes, in the airline business it is common, so I wouldn't discount the possibilty.

Maybe they knew all along that it would only take 2 weeks to put it together with a good machine, and ate all of their "contingency" time with the alleged breakdown.

I don't believe it though, we would've heard of it before now.
