Canada's POET Technologies, which has a lab at UConn and licenses its technology from the school, said it has extended its microprocessor-chip production contract with defense giant BAE Systems.
POET is developing a method of manufacturing faster and more energy-efficient chips. The company hopes its technology can disrupt established industry methods, which employ silicon wafers rather than POET's gallium arsenide wafers.
Under the extended agreement, BAE will make prototype chips on three-inch wafers, with the goal of graduating to six-inch wafers. The work will take place between now and August.
