OAKVILLE, Ont. — Fresh off a three-day trip to California during which he met with the heads of Apple and Tesla Motors Inc., Fiat Chrysler chief executive Sergio Marchionne is more determined than ever to pursue industry consolidation lest the “technology disruptors” beat the auto industry at its own game.

Marchionne, who brought Fiat and Chrysler together during the height of the financial crisis, has been pushing for major auto mergers to help deal with the soaring cost of building cars and trucks. During a presentation he made to analysts in late April, he didn’t rule out the possibility of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV doing a deal with Apple Inc. or Google Inc.
