'Natural selection' of semiconductor business keeps chip makers competitive

,,Ten years ago, Caulfield said there were 10 companies investing in research and development and manufacturing to develop the leading edge of semiconductor wafers. Today there are four - TSMC, GlobalFoundries, Intel and Samsung.

"This becomes the natural pruning or selection of how value changes in an ecosystem have to evolve to maintain its competitiveness," Caulfield said.
