proceeds = the profit or return derived from a commercial transaction

precedes = to go or be before in time, place, rank, etc.

so, saying "his reputation proceeds him" might paint him as a self-interested, narcissistic, profiteering sell-out.

which is of course probably not what you meant to say, at all.
