That´s exactly the advantage of Poets vcsel as I understand it and what hopefully opens the doors of all data centers:
Create a high quality, single mode, optical signal with only one component at low costs, low power consumption and small form factor.
As this is far better than everything else you can get at the moment, some doors should open wide. Poet seems to be the first and only one to enable data center´s switch from copper link to optical link at an economically reasonable level. And they long for something like that. Call it blue ocean or monopoly.
We will see if Poet will turn their announcements to material parts in 2016 and find good partners to produce sufficient numbers and high quality (so they promised).
If so, it´s up to the data centers to adopt and it´s up to all (financial very well equipped) competitors to fail in offering alternatives :-). Good luck to all of us.
So, some banana skins remain. Exciting 2016, isn´t it? I can´t wait for it.
