Save ~ $800,000 per year with POET AOC for a data center?
From the CC at 07:02 "So just roughly estimating that there are potentially 100,000 copper links, I mean, we are talking about half a million watts of power that you can save through a reasonable conversion of copper cables to optical cables. And that is a fairly significant savings on OPEX."
I am trying to put this in perspective, and may have some flaws in my estimates (please point out if you see something).
The average price people in the U.S. pay for electricity is about 12 cents per kilowatt-hour https://www.ovoenergy.com/guides/energy-guides/average-electricity-prices-kwh.html
This translates to $525,600 per year in savings (500,000 W or 500 kW x $0.12 x 8760 hours per year).
Further, "According to some estimates, for every 100 watts spent on running the servers, roughly another 50 watts is needed to cool them" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Server_farm#cite_note-BBCnews-6
Add another 50% saving, estimate $788,400 per year savings. Other factors may also contribute, and this is specific to the AOCs, with more coming.
A company such as Google appears to have 12 data centers in the US and 3 under construction (as of 2012, not sure about now) http://www.datacenterknowledge.com/archives/2012/05/15/google-data-center-faq/
Just thought this might be interesting.
Good luck!!
