Message: A Laser on Silicon - Not much details

It is so great to read these posts!

  • Bearb8: It "may" cost a bit more to produce but POET has proven the technology.

Possibly the costs for POET are even lower?
The calculation of oogee showed us: The surface of this Si-LASER is 6400 times larger than the POET VCSEL. This means much bigger chips, much less chips per wafer, ergo high costs!

OK, possibly there is an advantage of this big surface, possibly they can emitt more energy, so there could be applications for it.
But: POET can for sure be built in bigger surface, this SI-Laser can not shrink: due to the latice mismatch SI vs. GaAs they need to use buffer layers between SI and GaAs, and it seems they can not do this in smaller structures.

To me it is very clear, POET is the superior technology. Cardiff SIP is stuck in this developement (little improvements during the last 5 years?)...
Look at the progress POET made during the last years! Soon we will have a mass produced product! Soon we will see it.
