In the last sentence we can see a nice calculation:
For example, with a 10Gb/s link, a copper interconnect will consume
10W, while silicon photonics or VCsELs solutions will consume 0.2W. This equates to a cost
reduction from $3500/year for copper to $70/year for photonics.
This is a simple calculation per cable! 10 W per interconnect, I did not think that it is so much! Can this be true? This would sum up to nearly 88 kW/h per year!
We can see that replacing one copper cable by AOC the pure savings in energy are about 3430 USD/year per cable - neglecting the savings for cooling.
So here we have an idea what return on investment we can see when changing to AOC. And what price a company like POET could ask for such a cable...
