To me, it was a subtle way of saying that something big was going to happen before the end of April 30th because the Dear Doctor has put his entire life into this work and there's no way he would just retire unless he felt he had 'achieved' his dream.

I think news was intended for late in the week or next week and someone got wind of it, hence the big run ups in the last few days prior to the halt.
