I'm trying to be charitable here: In my experience, graphic designers trend younger. They are likely unaware of how natural changes in our vision as we age (presbyopia; decreased contrast sensitivity; nascent cataracts; etc) should inform their choices.

It's the creative art director, and ultimately the client, who should know better.
