Vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) is a semiconductor laser diode in which the infrared energy is emitted vertically from the top surface of the semiconductor wafer. This technology was commercialized in 1996, and since then it has been widely used for short range optical data communication and sensing applications. The most common wavelength range of VCSELs is between 750 nm to 980 nm, which is typically based on gallium arsenide wafers (GaAs).

In the last decade, VCSELs of higher wavelength, ranging up to 1300 nm, had been made available in the market for applications such as infrared illumination, pumping, and industrial heating.

Sensing is another application in which VCSEL devices are sold in high-volume. The optical mouse was the first most popular sensing device which made use of VCSEL to detect the movement and reflect it on the computer screen. It led to the exit of mechanical mouse from the market.

Their sensing capabilities have enabled the introduction of 3D sensing devices for gesture recognition in home entertainment and gaming devices, car navigation systems, and computers used in industrial applications and medical laboratories.

Although, the number of devices using gesture recognition is less, the demand is expected to increase tremendously in the coming years and fuel the growth of the VCSEL market

The highest demand for VCSELs, in terms of value, is from the optical data communication sector. VCSELs can transmit data over short range with high data transfer rates and reliability, making them ideal for data centers. The adoption of the Internet of Things (IoT) for consumer and industrial applications is expected to generate large volumes of data, with high transfer rates. The present number of data centers would not be sufficient to handle these large volumes of data.

Technology giants such as Microsoft Corporation (U.S.), Google, Inc. (U.S.), Facebook, Inc. (U.S.), Apple, Inc., (U.S.) and e-commerce companies such as Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. (China) and Amazon.com Inc. (U.S.) are in the process of constructing larger data centers. These new data centers are expected to generate the highest demand for VCSELs during the forecast period. Avago Technologies (Singapore and U.S.) and Finisar Corporation (U.S.) are the two leading providers of VCSEL devices for data communication applications.
