Nice finding oy our German fellow Sunny:
Monolithically Integrated GaAs-Based Transceiver Chips for Bidirectional Optical Data Transmission, already 11 years old, and the follow up 5 jears later.

It seems this group integrated VCSEL and detector, to me A/D and D/A transformation is missing (as they did not know the magic POET sauce). Any ideas?

Interesting is that one of the authors, Alexander Kern is now working at the automotive supplier Continental Group, and that he is sharing several publicatios with his former fellow Ahmed Al-Samaneh, now working at Avago!

So many dots we do not know, this is why it is so difficult to connect some of them...
