POET has clearly set an expectation for an update on the VCSEL, and I expect one. It might not be as bad as many may think. This was stated by POET's CEO at the last conference call, which was after the news about a PO in the works. Bold is mine.

First please note that there has been no meaningful change to the timeline for the commercialisation of POET’s integrated laser technology, including the VCSEL, which is expected in 2018 and will be targeted at Active Optical Cables, AOC applications. To date, no fundamental issues with the technology have been discovered, the company continues to work through technical hurdles related to the continued development and optimization of layers on the epitaxial stack.

I suspect the prototypes are delayed, but the end goal (commercialization) is not, and they plan to make up the time. Who knows for sure, but I hope we get some clarity, and I hope we hear "lots of progress".
