The worldwide market for silicon photonics technology should hit $918.3 million by 2025, says Grand View Research, Inc. in a new report. Use of silicon photonics in both commercial and consumer electronics applications will drive segment growth, according to the market research firm.
However, IT and telecommunication applications, particularly in the high-performance computing and data center niches, will provide most of the demand for silicon photonics in the forecast period, Grand View Research predicts. Besides consumer electronics, other areas where silicon photonics could make an impact include defense and security as well as healthcare and life science.
In IT and telecommunications, Grand View Research sees active optical cables, optical multiplexers, and optical attenuators as products where silicon photonics will shine. Optical transceivers also will benefit from the technology, of course. Most of the action so far has centered in North America, the market research firm points out.
Grand View Research cites the major value chain components for silicon photonics as:
- raw material suppliers
- component manufacturers (chip and optical interconnect fabrication firms)
- original equipment manufacturers (OEMs)
- server system distributors
- end-use segments.
