Significant that POET aims to reduce the size of the very latest technology by an order of magnitude, advantages this could bring are quite significant, 10X smaller physical size means 10X more optical engines per wafer, the benefits of this economy of scale should not be underestimated, both in cost /chip and production capacity; especially since the process is compatible with existing CMOS technology.  Add in the possibility of a much smaller overall product and perhaps increased energy efficiency (my assumption), I think you have real potential to succeed in a big way.
