A pretty clear picture of strategy is emerging if we all open our eyes to see it.
In the last webcast Suresh talked about the state of silicon photonics and for the first time described how POETs optical interposer provides a low cost and efficient solution to integrate a light source with benefits that cannot be ignored (which is obviously why leading companies have been attracted to the platform). A POET transmit engine can be integrated with low insertion loss while at the same time providing a heat sink to isolate the detrimental thermal effects on the silicon waveguides.
So the strategy: Give the silicon photonics industry a solution to the long standing problem of providing a light source that is CMOS friendly and overcomes the existing technical limitations to existing solutions.
Now read once again the following lines by Suresh:
customers who want to design-in all or portions of the Optical Interposer for 400G application
We believe that this process will lead them to understand the substantial benefits that a full Optical Interposer implementation will provide.
Now just to be clear there could be a number of different combinations that POET is providing including POETs MUX/DEMUX and the receive optical engine. But the one thing that has plagued the silicon photonics industry despite many years of research is a viable means to insert a light source efficiently.
