A walk down memory lane.
The realities of POET life and the $70 club. Lumenge commented the other day about the current discussions beginning to lean towards the historical vision of there being so many applications for the OI that it would be too big for any one company to own. If I read it right it was a facetious remark that combined a mix of humor and perhaps reflection of how wrong that narrative was and let’s not get carried away with what the potential is in the second generation of POET.
Personally I see very little to equate then and now in both the attitude of the people involved and the breadth of application. I mean the OI I believe will be a very important technology for optical integration that could easily be an approach that industry will use as a default process as needed because it is easily adaptable to the current industry.
But the GaAs platform as envisioned by its creator and those around him held way too much technology breadth for any one company to develop. "they will do things with it that no one ever thought of...we don't know what it will become". Those statements made regarding the GaAs technology were propagated on the basis of belief that it could be developed and that the world needed it.
Check out the list of patents and you will find a platform that revolutionizes just about everything in the semiconductor industry. There are reasons why people were saying it would take many companies to develop it.
That is not what POET is today but I do want to see all this IP by Dr Taylor looked at and investigated in the future and I think that will happen.
