Suresh was of course Senior VP of Technology Development at Global Foundries. As such he was very much involved in new technologies at the highest level finding solutions to combine components with very different operating characteristics into hybrid packages. Global Foundries R&D budget was in excess of $1 billion. He spent much of his career investigating new technologies which in his earlier years included investigative work under the CTO of Motorola, Padmasree Warrior who of course would become the CEO of Cisco.
But just to be clear it was Bill Ring's invention which Suresh turned into this novel approach to package optics in a CMOS process. A low temperature low stress dielectric that is etched into a waveguides that can manipulate and transfer light with precision and connect to whatever material set that is required. A work of art.
