Baba: Is one entity that has the OI or some other device that does essentially the same thing going to have a monopoly? Or is our OI (or anyone else’s similar product) going to be right for portions of this apparently huge market?
The optical interposer platform is unique. No one else has found a way to build the mux/demux for wavelength division multiplexing in a CMOS compatible flow which is in my opinion a very big aspect of POET's holy grail. It is the dielectric stack that makes this possible. Interesting a comment that I passed on to this forum from our new president. The need for patents on this platform in his opinion is not essential since no one is going to be able to duplicate the recipe. I never gave it a second thought as to the implications of this other than to recognize that there are knowhow and trade secret barriers to anyone trying to copy the tech.
POET has had a group in Ottawa designing waveguides that will be the foundation for multiple applications. Others will build the optical interposer ready active devices.
The question of whether they will license the technology has yet to be determined at least that was the position that was voiced.
