So we know that multiplexed 100G QSFP is the form factor that dominates the Asia Pacific (as Suresh has pointed out as a big market for POET) and that POET’s JV with SAIC is the exclusive global supplier for these 100G optical engines. But what about single lambda 100G transceivers that this article points to? The thing to remember is that achieving these higher data rates through the application of advanced modulation techniques adds cost and complexity including latency to correct the increased bit error. But it is an interesting question to ask whether POET is providing the platform for this so that CISCO can compete with the lower cost, form factor, performance etc. You know the water level processing testing and assembly plus best in class coupling efficiency. The stuff that POET brings to the table.
So the question really becomes expanded to: Is POET allowed provide a single lambda 100G optical engine for CISCO? It is of course a future discussion that POET management would not be able to share with investors yet but Suresh could certainly provide an overview of strength and weakness of future single lambda 100G pluggable applications. One thing we have learned over time is that companies need to diversify their products and pay very close attention to cost as the industry has never kept up with the expected trajectory to higher data rates.
In other words a bird in the hand ......
