Actually reducing the combined coupling efficiency is always desirable but that is not really the objective. POET already  achieves excellent laser to waveguide coupling without the added beam shaping capability of the facet attached microlenses.  What this added capability will provide is increased manufacturing efficiency (Increased margin in the assembly process). So this is all about maximizing manufacturing efficiency.
