Abstract: Marvell, Lumentum and Coherent Announce Successful Interoperability of 800G ZR/ZR+ Optical Modules with Transmission Links of up to 500 Kilometers. This achievement demonstrates that pluggable modules based on multi-vendor standards can achieve the performance required for up to 500 kilometers of interconnection between regional cloud data centers while ensuring interoperability, a first in the industry for 800G technology.

SANTA CLARA, Calif., United States, Sept. 5, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Marvell, a leader in semiconductor solutions for data infrastructure Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ: MRVL), Lumentum Holdings, a market-leading designer and manufacturer of innovative optical and photonic products Inc. (NASDAQ: LITE), and Coherent, a leader in compound semiconductor and high-speed optical networking technologies Corp. (NYSE: COHR) today announced the successful implementation of 800G with transmission links of up to 500 kilometers Interoperability of ZR/ZR+ transceivers. This achievement demonstrates that pluggable modules based on multi-vendor standards can achieve the performance required for up to 500 kilometers of interconnection between regional cloud data centers while ensuring interoperability, a first in the industry for 800G technology.

Cloud operators are expanding their infrastructure to support AI services by building more regional data centers, which requires optimizing power consumption and cost for interconnect. Pluggable coherent modules and digital signal processors (DSPs) increase bandwidth by up to 8x with each new generation, while reducing power consumption per bit by 30 percent. The emergence of standards-based, multi-vendor ecosystems has further accelerated innovation and minimized the risk of vendor lock-in.

The 800G ZR/ZR+ transceivers used in this demonstration are based on Marvell® Orion 800G coherent optical DSP. The three companies' modules demonstrate interoperable metro distance transmission with more than 2dB headroom over a 520-kilometer-long G.652 fiber link using 16QAM.

Marvell, Lumentum and Coherent developed the modules using their respective optical and module technologies, while leveraging Orion DSP functionality to extend transmission distances from the standard 120 km to 500 km while maintaining compliance with the OIF 800G ZR specification.

Scott, Principal Analyst at Cignal AI "Since 2022, pluggable coherent module deployments have grown at a compound annual growth rate of more than 100%, which is faster than any other coherent technology in history," Wilkinson said. Their performance is increasingly approaching that of traditional embedded optics, with the 800Gbps offered by Marvell, Lumentum and Coherent The interoperability test results of ZR/ZR+ modules for long-distance data center interconnection (DCI) show that the application space of pluggable modules has far exceeded that of short-distance data center interconnection. ”

Stephen Adolph, Vice President of Marketing, Marvell: "Long-range optical connectivity used to be the exclusive domain of embedded optical solutions, but this is no longer the case. Like Marvell® COLORZ® Interoperable ZR/ZR+ modules like the 800 are now available from multiple vendors to address the longer data center interconnect distances that cloud operators need to cover as they scale their infrastructure into the AI era. ”

Wupen, President of Lumentum's Cloud and Networking Division "The need for more bandwidth and longer distances across all parts of the network, from data center interconnects to submarine cables, is growing rapidly," Yuen said. "We are excited to work with Marvell on this generation of high-performance optics and pluggable modules." Our collaboration demonstrates how pluggable modules can scale even the largest networks to meet the challenges of the future, providing cost-effective, space-saving and energy-efficient solutions. ”

Pranay, Vice President of Product Line Management, Coherent Transmission Solutions "Pluggability is an important inflection point in the transport space," said Aiya. Each generation of pluggable coherent modules further expands network coverage, enabling 800G services to extend beyond data center interconnects to metro and regional applications. These results demonstrate the interoperability of 800G pluggable modules at optimal performance and provide a cost-effective vendor ecosystem for both cloud and legacy network operators. ”
