Message: Some thoughts about paid analyst and influencer coverage

Small, pre-revenue, and under $5 per share companies will never get much analyst coverage. YouTube influencers will not care too much either.

So what is a company to do? You can try to push the narrative by having an in house PR department, which POET does sporadically. Adrian does a good job, but he is preaching to the choir. A wide audience outside of your already captive shareholders and followers on social media is not going to be engaged.

If you are large and well invested with big players, when they make waves and get media attention, that can help. POET does not have that either, yet. These announcements about working with xyz are great, we know what it means, but retail does not, and the institutions are waiting for revenue growth.

So that leaves a few other options. The trade shows and awards, which seem very positive for POET, and their coverage by the trade press. But really, does that move the needle for a lot of new investors? Most have not idea about photonics and the whole concept of moving from electrons to photons.

Old school thinking is the Squawkbox type of TV, the financial press. Again, highly tilted toward the larger companies, or fast gainers, or novel products that engage or retail oriented, where you may see something in a store or on the road. Again, POET is not the right fit quite yet.

So here we are, with a paid promoter on YouTube. He has some chops with the technical jargon. He has woven together a really nice video. He seems committed to the truth as he sees it. He is very up front that this was sponsored. On that point, what is the difference between a Wall Street M&A firm that has staff analysts looking at their clients businesses and "reporting" or engaging analysts where they have big pull with outside "independent" analysts. I'd say a YouTuber who already has a good following is no different, or in an even better position to be independent than some staff analyst beholden to the powers that be.

There is a big world of youger investors who prefer video. Look at Cathy Wood and her staff of telegenic investment specialists. Her embracing the video world is part of her success (though she has taken some lumps lately), the video element has done well for her.

My hope is that several of POET's big partners will makes some waves with their POET enabled products, and that will garner legit news media, which POET may ride as the enabling tech underneath the hood of what they are doing. This YouTuber will be doing unpaid content at that point, wanting to tout his foresight and wisdom.
