What's next for coherent pluggable technology for connecting data centers over long (10-1000km)? Loi Nguyen, PhD, EVP of cloud optics at Marvell Technology provides his predictions at ECOC Exhibition:

--The market for pluggable optics for data center interconnects is now approximately $1 billion. (Separately,
Lisa Huff, CDCMP® of Omdia says DC capex will pass $12 billion by 2029.
--Total data center capex, meanwhile, will hit $240 billion next year and rise to $900 billion in five years.
--Pluggable efficiency continues to climb. 100G modules consumed 4.5 watts. 400G modules consumed 4.5-5.5 watts per 100G of transmission. 800G modules, coming to market now, are at 3.5W to 4W per 100G.
--1.6T modules will be under 2 watts per 100G.
--Put another way, with the 1.6T generation, the industry will have achieved a 16x leap in speed and a 40x decrease in power per bit.
--Quality and reliability are improving with field data. The chart pictured is based on eight years of field data and 10 billion device hours.
--60% of ports today are from pluggables. The figure will rise to 80%>
