I don't think anyone is implying there is a direct relationship between the price of gold and KXL share price but to think there is no relationship (maybe medium- to long-term) is not right either...

Higher gold price means stronger producers... stronger producers means more money directed towards increasing production and exploration... increased exploration means stronger explorers... stronger explorers means stronger KXL...

All this even more so in an environment of record gold prices and decreasing global gold reverves.
